One of the most frequently asked questions we get from our customers when they pick up their custom framed art, has to do with what is the proper height when hanging their framed art.

In our experience from hanging art professionally, our answer is straightforward, do what museums do. Museums hang art at eye level, which is roughly between 56 and 61 inches from the floor. In other words, make sure the center of your artwork is about 57″ from your floor.

Take a look at the image below, which is the inside of the Kimbell Art Museum, in Fort Worth, Texas, and notice how all art pieces are hung at eye level.

What about hanging multiple frames vertically?

Furthermore, whenever hanging two framed pieces vertically, the same eye-level principle applies. After you determine the 57″ mark from the floor on the wall, hang one piece above this mark, and the second one below it, as illustrated in the image above.

What about Art above the sofa?

Lastly, the rule of thumb for hanging art above a sofa is to leave 5 to 8 inches of distance, as illustrated in the photo below:
